Venture eastwards beyond the Via Emilia towards famous coastal towns like Ravenna and Rimini, and into the serene hills rising above the Adriatic coast in the heartland of Romagna, Emilia's other half. This enchanting part of the Emilia Romagna region, steeped in history and tradition, is home to medieval hilltop citadels guarding some of Italy's most extraordinary culinary treasures.
Your journey begins with a visit to the world of Formaggio di Fossa (Pit Cheese), one of the rarest and most fascinating cheeses in existence. Matured in oxygen-free, straw-lined underground pits that date back to the Middle Ages, this cheese was historically hidden to protect provisions from invading armies. Today, the tradition lives on, creating a cheese with an extraordinary flavor and aroma found nowhere else. You'll step into one of these ancient houses with its underground pit to discover the unique aging process and taste this rare delicacy, a thousand years in the making.
Next, we explore the artistry behind Extra Virgin Olive Oil and regional wines at a small, internationally recognized award-winning producer. Stroll through the picturesque olive groves perched on misty terraces, and wander the surrounding vineyards that bring life to some of Romagna's finest wines. Learn the intricate methods used to craft these exceptional products, from the pressing of olives to the fermentation of grapes. Weather permitting, a BBQ lunch in the olive groves awaits, accompanied by guided tastings of premium olive oils (including a lesson on the tasting techniques used professionally), wines, and other local delights—a feast that captures the essence of Romagna's gastronomic heritage.
Finally, to complete this truly extraordinary day, we’ll visit Dozza, voted one of Italy's most beautiful medieval villages. Stroll through its cobbled streets, marvelling at the vibrant murals that adorn the walls of its houses. This open-air gallery, with over 100 stunning works by contemporary artists, as well as the Medieval fortress housing the Regional Wine Cellar is a celebration of art and history, offering a captivating end to your journey.
This is more than a tour; it’s an exclusive invitation to savor Romagna’s most cherished flavours and cultural treasures. Join us on this once-in-a-lifetime experience that will leave you with the most unforgettable memories.
