A Taste of Yummy Bologna - HALF DAY
Where better than to see and smell the delights of Emilian food than Bologna, the capital of Italian gastronomy?
In the company of a specialist Food & Gastronomy guide, you will be taken on a journey of the senses, to Bologna’s town centre known as ‘Il ventre di Bologna’ or ‘Bologna’s stomach’. With the smell of freshly roasted coffee wafting in the air from the local bars, the delicious smell of hams and Parmesan cheeses from the local delis and freshly baked bread from one of Bologna’s oldest bakeries, you will wander through these medieval streets and alleys, visiting some of Bologna’s best-known gastronomic institutions. This experience will teach you not only about Italian but especially Emilian gastronomic authenticity and will tell you the truth about some of Italy’s best-known gastronomic clichés.

We start in an award-winning cafè where we will talk about Italian coffee culture, and over a map of the 44 and counting PDO and PGI products we will talk about the agricultural and gastronomic history and traditions of the foods and dishes of Emilia Romagna and understand exactly why Emilia Romagna is the world's capital of food. We will wander around Bologna’s Quadrilatero area – visiting the vegetable markets, historic bakeries and delicatessens where we will talk about, select and purchase a range of the more unusual food products found in Emilia Romagna. We will carry out tastings of several versions of Mortadella (surely one of Bologna’s most iconic products). Our next stop is the Osteria del Sole, a 15th century watering hole where guests brought their own food and purchased the wine to drink in-house. You will learn how Bologna’s most iconic dishes – Tortellini in Brodo and Tagliatelle al Ragù were conceived and why.
Last but not least, we will visit a wonderful gelateria voted 2nd in Italy, where we will be greeted by the exuberant owner Maurizio who will guide us through a selection of his most unusual flavours and made with the more esoteric ingredients.
This experience offers you, quite literally, a taste of the very best that Bologna and Emilia Romagna have to offer.
This experience includes various tastings, the brief pasta-making workshop (you won’t want lunch), a personal guide and takes approximately 4-5 hours in total.
For the full-day 8 hour version which also includes a visit to a hand-made pasta workshop (also a quick lesson for whoever is interested) and one of Bologna's few artisanal Mortadella producers, please contact us.
Accommodation not included.
